Overview

The existing town website held useful information, but navigation was crowded and important content was hard to scan. The redesign needed to make notices, records, recreation information and contact details easier to find while creating a structure that staff could maintain more easily.

What the work needed to do

The redesign simplifies the main navigation, adds clearer entry points on the homepage and organizes town information into more focused sections. It also creates room for practical tools like a facility calendar while giving Balcarres a more recognizable visual identity.

Key decisions

The choices that shaped the final direction.

01

Clear paths into key information

The homepage and top navigation bring the town’s most important tasks closer to the surface, helping residents find what they need without scanning a crowded interface.

02

A municipal system with more character

Bold typography, historical imagery and a restrained green palette give the website a clearer identity while keeping the experience practical and readable.

03

Useful structure over visual clutter

Focused content areas, fewer competing elements and better page separation make notices, records, recreation information and contact details easier to maintain and easier to use.

Process / Evidence

01Navigation

The redesign started by simplifying the way people enter the site.

The original website contained useful resources, but a long side menu and busy layout buried the most important routes. The first step was reducing clutter and clarifying the main paths into town information.

The project began by reducing clutter and making key information easier to find.
02System

The website was designed as a connected set of pages.

Homepage, town office, resident information, recreation and contact pages were developed as one consistent municipal system rather than isolated screens. That helped the structure feel more coherent and easier to maintain.

The redesigned pages were built as one clear system with shared structure and hierarchy.
03Feature

Recreation was treated as a useful local feature, not filler.

The recreation section introduces practical tools like the facility calendar, disc golf information and supporting FAQs. This gives the site more day-to-day usefulness for residents while keeping the interface clean.

Exact contribution

DEMO developed the website direction, interface system and case-study presentation, then began translating the design into WordPress. The work focused first on stronger information hierarchy, clearer page structure and a more approachable municipal experience.

Outcome

The project is in progress. The redesign direction and prototype are complete, and WordPress implementation is underway. Final content and launch timing remain subject to town review.

Reflection

Balcarres shows how a municipal website can feel more useful and more local at the same time. Stronger hierarchy, fewer distractions and clearer entry points do more than update the look. They make public information easier to use.
